Intramuros’ Next Top Model
SEE ON FLICKR
DAY 4 - January 4, 2010
Went on a photo walk today with Flickr contact and friend Adrian (Bakonawa) who is visiting from Guam for the holidays. Ron and I took him to Intramuros so we could walk the streets of Manila.
Although there were plenty of historic sites to photograph this photo stands out as the highlight of our photo walk.
We met AJ and his friends at the memorial for victims of 1945 Battle of Liberation. The kids initially came up to us to ask us for alms for Christmas. I joked back saying Christmas had already passed.
The kids then asked if I could take a photo with them. Soon thereafter they were already asking that we photograph them. We couldn’t stop laughing because they had all these crazy poses.
AJ actually gets all the credit for this photo of himself. He came up to us and asked that we take a photo of him with half his face reflected on the black marble - almost as if he already had practiced this pose several times before. Very impressive top model in the making. =)

Day 3 - January 3, 2010
Really enjoyed my cake today. But am particularly drawn to this photo (taken a few minutes earlier) and as such have chosen it as my photo of the day instead.
What gives it character I believe is the juxtaposition of elements. From the natural and the manmade to the ground and the sky.
The power lines on the other hand, (which at first looked to me as cluttering this photo) bind the contrasting elements into symbolic unison.
From the ground comes the nutrients that give this plant life, and from the power lines the electricity that bring these lamps their light.
Oftentimes in life we choose to see things strictly from one point. But Project 365, as an exercise in experimenting with perspectives, has taught me that sometimes our willingness to embrace humility will result in better appreciation of what we always thought to be the norm.

Connected

Day 2 - January 2, 2010
One of the themes of the movie Avatar is about how we are all connected beings. How each of us is linked by an intricate and highly complex root system.
The tube of lights at the center of the photograph reminds me of the synaptic connection that is created when a human “links” with his Na’vi counterpart. While the shower of bokeh are reminiscent of bioluminescent hangings from the Tree of Souls.
Although there is danger in reading too much into fiction, it is worth keeping in mind that we are all indeed connected one way or the other. Each action that we choose to make can directly/indirectly affect other people, things and/or beings - so let’s make responsible choices in the course of living our lives to the fullest.

New Beginnings

Day 1 - January 1, 2010
I remember back as a child I was particularly fond of the Reset button on my Nintendo 64. It was the best way to start over when my video game didn’t start the way I wanted to…perfect.
I always look back at that as the best example of my quest for perfection, and also for starting over. Unfortunately in the real world, an easy “reset” isn’t always possible. Sometimes we just have to make do with a bad start, move on, flip the pages and try to make the most of it.
Several months back I embarked upon something called Project 365. The goal was to take one photo each day of the year to inspire me to find beauty in each circumstance. I missed a few days and then went downhill from there. Failure.
But I am putting all that behind me. 2009 is over, and as I flip the page to 2010 I have a feeling that this year’s going to be different. I’m going to make it work.
